When Casimir launched, we did so with the first release of a gorgeous photo story by Tao Farren-Hefer who went down to the beach at dawn week after week to document Cape Town’s remarkable Sunrise Swimmers catching waves. “I discovered that they were a dynamic group of incredibly positive people who, in their retirement, are now rediscovering their youth and happiness through the sea. Incredibly, regardless of the weather, they do not miss a day. They are known to swim in rain, hail and the Cape’s gale-force South Easter, only skipping a day when their lives are endangered by lightning storms.”
The collection of photographs, which you should really take a look at if you haven’t already, is now followed by a short documentary film in which we hear from the swimmers themselves as they share their childhood memories of the sea and tell us about their daily routine, and why they do it, “In fact, as we walk to the water some mornings, it’s so cold, we’ll look at each other and say, “Why are we doing this?” And the other will say, “Because that’s what we do.””
It’s a celebration of life and living it well. As one swimmer says, “On a day like today, it’s just wonderful to be alive.” What a great reminder.
